Interesting Facts About Roofs
Even though the word “fun” is not something you would associate with roofing, our professional roofing service team has compiled a list of interesting and little-known facts about roofing.
1. Some of the oldest roofing materials are stone, thatch, and clay. Thatch was used between 5000 and 1800 B.C. Clay tiles can trace their lineage all the way back to 10,000 BC!
2. Thatched roofs are effective because the reed is naturally waterproof and tightly bundled, so it sheds water. A thatched roof is able to shed the likes of snow, water, and sleet.
3. Metal roofing materials are lighter in weight than the likes of wood shingles.
4. Metal roofs are not contrary to popular belief, prone to lightning strikes. Lightning is drawn to other materials, not just metal. In point of fact, metal roofs will actually protect your home against lightning as they are non-combustible.
5. Even though asphalt shingles are relatively new, they are still by far the most popular roofing material in America. As 75% of the homes in North America have them.
6. Water will travel before it drips. For example, a leak will come out twenty feet away from the original leak. Most people overlook their roofs, which is a mistake as it is the most important part of your home.
7. The most common weak spots are areas that need protection from flashing. However, damaged shingles or what lays underneath them are also common causes of leaks. A leak may not mean always mean you need to replace the entire roof. However, if the leak has persisted too long, the chances are great that there will be dry rot present or the roof is too old.
